Continuing its upgrade spree on the computer front, Apple has updated its diminutive desktop solution, the Mac mini, with third-generation dual-core Intel Core i5 and quad-core Intel Core i7 processors.

Delivering twice as much performance with integrated graphics up to 65 percent faster, the new Mac mini comes standard with 4GB of 1600 MHz memory (RAM) with support for up to 16GB, and 500GB of storage. Customers can also opt for a 1TB (5400-rpm) hard drive, configurable to a 256GB solid-state drive or 1TB Fusion Drive.

Apple explains that “Fusion Drive is an innovative new storage option that gives customers the performance of flash storage and the capacity of a hard drive.”

By combining 128GB of flash storage with a standard 1TB or 3TB HDD, Fusion Drive creates a single storage volume that manages files intelligently, optimizing read and write instructions for maximum performance.

“Fusion Drive adapts to the way you use your iMac and automatically moves the files and apps you use most often to flash storage to enable faster performance and quicker access,” according to the computer giant in Cupertino, California.

The mini now includes four USB 3.0 ports, one Thunderbolt, an HDMI connector, SDXC, Gigabit Ethernet, and FireWire 800. The graphics chip is Intel HD 4000.

As always, the Mac mini meets the stringent environmental requirements of EPEAT scoring a Gold Rating, as well as Energy Star 5.2.

“Mac mini retains its status as the world’s most energy efficient desktop computer, using only 11W when idle,” Apple adds.

The system ships with PVC-free components and cables, contains no brominated flame retardants, and uses material-efficient packaging designs and highly-recyclable materials.

Starting at $599/ €460, the 2012 Mac mini ships with OS X Mountain Lion pre-installed, “bringing Messages, Notification Center, system-wide Sharing, AirPlay Mirroring, Dictation, Game Center and the enhanced security of Gatekeeper to your Mac.”

Server configurations start at $999 / €770 with a 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz) with 6MB L3 cache and two 1TB (5400-rpm) hard drives.

The new mini is immediately available through the Apple online store, Apple’s retail stores, as well as authorized resellers worldwide.
