This week, Apple posted new updates on the Downloads section of its website, including a Server Admin Tools 10.6.2 one, an update recommended for the remote administration of Snow Leopard Server. Server Admin Tools contains remote administration tools, documentation, and utilities that you can install on a computer other than your server.

The 10.6.2 update, according to the Cupertino-based electronics and software maker, includes the latest releases of iCal Server Utility, Podcast Composer, Server Admin, Server Monitor, Server Preferences, System Image Utility, Workgroup Manager, and Xgrid Admin. The company offers more detailed information on the update on its Support section via a tech note.

Support document HT3931 outlines the particularities of Apple’s Server Admin Tools for Mac OS X, as well as what’s new in each of the updated components enumerated above. The update to Server Admin, for instance, improves the stability of the Server Admin application, includes Netboot/Netinstall model filters for Macs introduced in October, 2009, and fixes an issue that could cause a cache file to grow out of bounds when Server Admin checks for server software updates from behind an authenticated web proxy. Additionally, the DHCP service status is now reported correctly when viewing the Netboot service overview.

Server Preferences now offers an improved general usability and reliability, including the creation and deletion of users and groups, while guest access for File Sharing is now correctly granted when enabled in Server Preferences. Xgrid Admin allows one to connect to Mac OS X Server v10.5 Leopard Xgrid controllers, with the System Image Utility now including Netboot/Netinstall model filters for Macs introduced in October, 2009.

Workgroup Manager enhancements include a user interface fix for an issue in Mac OS X Server v10.6.1 that prevented the creation of users with a period "." in the short name on a Snow Leopard Server. It also fixes a user-interface issue in Mac OS X Server v10.6.1 that could cause incorrect options to appear when creating users on a Snow Leopard Server.
