Internet tethering, the feature that allows iPhone owners to connect their computer to the Internet using the device’s Cellular Data connection, requires either an iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS, and the latest version of the iOS, Apple claims in a knowledge base article updated this week. A number of requirements need to be met on the computer side as well, whether the customer runs Mac OS X, or Windows.

“Internet tethering lets you connect your computer to the Internet using the Cellular Data connection on your iPhone,” Apple explains on the Support area of its website. “To use this feature, your wireless carrier must support Internet tethering. In addition, your iPhone and computer must meet minimum system requirements.”

iPhone requirements are fairly simple - use an iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS with (preferably) the latest version of iOS (namely iOS 4 for the time being). Customers are informed that tethering is not available on the original iPhone. Apple then moves on to the computer requirements, which are provided as follows.

Computer requirements

For Internet tethering using a USB port, you need:
- A Mac OS X computer running Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later or a computer running Windows XP Service Pack 3 or later, Windows Vista, or Windows 7, and a USB 2.0 port.
- iTunes 9.2 or later downloaded and installed on your computer.
Note: if you downloaded iTunes 9.2 using a web browser, you may still need to install it. See this article if you experience an issue installing iTunes.
- An Apple iPhone USB cable (included with iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS).

For Internet tethering using a Bluetooth port, you need:
- A computer running Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later (Mac OS X 10.5.8 recommended) with Bluetooth 2.0 or a computer running Windows XP Service Pack 3 or later, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 with Bluetooth 2.0.
- To turn on Bluetooth on your iPhone and your computer.
- iPhone must be paired to your computer.

After verifying that they have all the necessary “ingredients” to start enjoying the benefits of Internet tethering using their iPhone’s Cellular Data connection, customers are encouraged to tap Settings > General > Network> Internet Tethering and confirm that their carrier supports Internet tethering. For example, AT&T supports iPhone Internet tethering only if the customer runs iOS 4 or later on their device.

“If you don't see this option, and your carrier supports Internet tethering, connect iPhone to iTunes to install a carrier settings update in iTunes,” Apple recommends. “If you don't see a carrier settings update, your carrier may not support Internet tethering,” Apple adds. In this case, customers are advised to refer to this article for a list of iPhone carriers that support Internet tethering, or to contact their carrier for additional information.

6/23/10 - I met the system requirements for tethering with iphone 3G IOS4 etc. followed the instructions in this article, and was referred to AT&T for assistance. I just spoke to AT&T and they say contrary to this article, that they do not yet support internet tethering for iphone - they indicated that it would be "soon" but not yet. So, I guess we still have to wait.

They now support it, but if you activate internet tethering you will not be able to keep any of the older unlimited data plans. You will be forced to adopt one of the new limited data plans.

I was told that internet tethering is not allowed for iPhone 3GS; iPhone 4 only. I think the reason for this decision is because AT&T won't be able to handle the load on their network. Oh well! AT&T probably would've have charged a ridiculous amount to add this feature just because it's for one of the hottest phones on the market.

Tethering can be done on the 3GS. But I think it is only through jailbreaking the phone that I have seen. I have a friend who has one and we were tethering his laptop to it yesterday. He has the iPhone 3GS, 32gb with OS 3.1.2 on it and jailbroken. It works perfectly fine through the USB cable and even bluetooth (although slower than USB by 1/2). I think AT&T did not support it through the 3GS is probably because they could not track it and then be able to charge you for it. I am sure now with iOS 4 they will be able to track your tethering and then nail you good and make you pay that separate rate. Not to mention the costs if you go over your plan, etc.

I originally had the jailbroken iphone 3GS tethering, and upgraded to iphone 4.0 on my 3Gs. Internet Tethering appeared in the settings natively, but said "Please contact AT&T to use internet tethering".. So I did, and they want to charge an extra $42.50 per month (on top of my $30 data plan), just to use this feature. They're afraid I'm going to hook up to the iphone on my computer, and drain their network, by downloading 500 TB of porn or something, or perhaps take down the US lol. Anyways, they don't like tethering. I would say, if you can get away with doing it without them knowing, F-Them, good for you. $80/month for using their network is overpriced. I would go with Cricket, or another wireless USB device that receives 3/4G internet, and keep the iphone dataplan as low as possible.

They told me that the 40 something dollar fee was not on top of what you are currently paying, but the price of one of the new data plans including tethering. The new plans are not unlimited data though. If you have one of the unlimited data plans that was grandfathered in, then you will have to give it up for a newer limited data plan.

Though Apple officially says that Bluetooth tethering will work on 10.4.11, their techs confirm that you really need 10.5.

I have been trying for weeks to get it to work on 10.4.11. It will pair and the Iphone will confirm tethering, but the connection to the internet stops at the iphone. Something in iphone prevents it.
