Apple on Thursday released Thunderbolt Firmware Update v1.2, a minute 1.22 MB installer package that contains fixes for Target Disk Mode and Thunderbolt connections.

According to a technical note on Apple Support, Thunderbolt Firmware Update v1.2 “provides stability fixes for Thunderbolt and Target Disk Mode.”

This being a firmware update and all, your system will need to reboot to complete the installation process.

“When your computer restarts a gray screen will appear with a status bar to indicate the progress of the update,” Apple explains.

Users are urged not to tamper with their Macs as the installation takes place. Also, notebook owners will need to have their MagSafes at hand.

“Do not disturb or shut off the power on your computer during this update. Note: Your computer must be plugged into AC power for the update to install,” the tech-note states.

The “system requirement” for this update (in other words, the OS X version that needs it) is OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.3. Apple mistakenly dubs the OS “Lion” on this particular occasion.

The installer package supports various different languages, including Deutsch, English, Français, Español, Italiano, Nederlands, Dansk, Norsk Bokmål, Polski, Português, Português (Brasil), Pусский, Suomi, Svensk, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

Some firmware updates may not be displayed automatically in the Mac App Store’s Software Update tab, in which case they must be manually downloaded.

Apple states, “If you are unsure whether your computer needs a particular update, simply download and open the update installer. The installer will alert you if the firmware update is already installed or not needed.”
