Apple Tracking Retail Customers via Internal App

Apple has deployed an internal application for retail staffers that allows them to locate and assist customers using the retail stores’ “Smart Signs” - custom made iPads found on display tables that give visitors access to a wealth of product information.

The internal app is customized for each store and permits staff to see when customers are requesting assistance and, most importantly, where. A red dot appears on the staffer’s iPod touch to pinpoint the exact location of the customer in need of purchasing advice, or checkout.

The app also informs employees when a customer has arrived to pick up an item, after they’ve ordered it from the Apple Store iOS application on their iDevice.

Apple believes the new solution will put less pressure on customers, as it allows them to get help only when they want it.
