A new leak has occurred in the Apple camp, this time around involving several iPhone prototypes, two of which reportedly having four-inch screens and a new dock connector, as previously rumored.
The well-connected 9to5mac claims to know of two iPhones in testing with a larger display – the iPhone 5,1 and iPhone 5,2. These devices are labeled as “next-generation” test units in the PreEVT stage of development.
They are codenamed N41AP (5,1) and N42AP (5,2) and “sport a new, larger display that is 3.95 inches diagonally.”
The resolution is 640 x 1136, which means there will be an extra 176 pixels along the height of the screen, and the width will remain unchanged. The aspect ratio would be close to 16:9.
Cupertino is testing these phones with iOS 6, according to the leak: “Apple is currently testing builds of iOS 6 that are custom-built to the new iPhone’s display. These builds include a tweaked home screen with a fifth row of icons (besides the stationary app dock) and extended application user interfaces that offer views of more content.”
Back to the hardware, both prototypes “definitely” had a home button when observed from up close, as well as the rumored smaller dock connector.
It is not shaped like a pill, as previously rumored, but it does fall between a Micro-USB and a Mini-USB connector, as far as the size is concerned.
This is only the last in a long series of leaks by 9to5mac whose sources are generally accurate. The next iPhone is expected to make a debut this fall, not at the Worldwide Developers Conference, as estimated by some analysts and pundits.
The phone is also said to have LTE / 4G wireless capabilities.
