Sources in Apple’s supply chain say the Cupertino giant is actively testing prototype displays for iPhones and iPads that are larger than the current-generation models.

According to these sources, cited by the Wall Street Journal, “In recent months, Apple has asked for prototype smartphone screens larger than 4 inches and has also asked for screen designs for a new tablet device measuring slightly less than 13 inches diagonally.”

The current models have smaller screens. The iPhone has a 4-inch display, whereas the iPad has a 9.7-inch display. A diminutive version of the tablet, dubbed “iPad mini,” has a 7.9-inch display.

But while Apple is reportedly testing the potentially larger devices, the WSJ cautions that these products may not ultimately come to market.

“The Cupertino, Calif., company routinely tests different designs for its products as it refines them during development,” says the financial publication.

The paper also reveals that Apple and its suppliers are also getting ready to ramp up production of the iPad 5, which is expected to have about the same size and screen resolution as the current-selling model, “but with a lighter and thinner display structure,” according to the same sources.

As far as the next-generation iPhone is concerned, component production began last month, the paper says. According to one person cited in the report, Apple told Foxconn (its primary assembler) “to get ready to ship the new iPhones in late August.”

The report also mentions the budget / plastic iPhone, as well as the next-generation iPhone (likely dubbed 5S). Both will ship in multiple colors, the sources said.

Apple will unveil these new products at a special event this fall, according to most rumors. CEO Tim Cook himself told investors at a recent earnings call to look out for Apple’s most exciting 2013 announcements in autumn.
