Apple Tablet to Run Mac OS X 10.7 'Clouded Leopard,' Tipster Claims

In what was a very predictable move someone finally “uncovered” the so-called development documentation of the Apple tablet, or iSlate, as some believe it will be called. While the iSlate dubbing sounds like it was picked out of a hat, rather than thought out by Steve Jobs & Co., these specifications purporting to be typical to an Apple tablet computer don’t rub us the right way either.

Rumor site phoneArena claims to have “received some images of what seem to be internal Apple documents, revealing the Apple iSlate specifications.”
The site doesn’t go a long way to suggest they are not real, although it’s pretty obvious an Intel 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo processor and 2GB of RAM expandable to 8GB is a tad too much for tablet specs. Or so it would seem, if Apple isn’t targeting these babies at gene-splicing / hadron-colliding engineers.

The so-called strong points of the alleged Clouded Leopard

Nevertheless, we cannot deny our readers the pleasure of going through the iSlate development document for themselves. Click on the two images in this article to see the alleged paper scans.

As this documentation would have us believe, Apple starts out by noting a “precision aluminum unibody,” a technology employed by all MacBook models today. Undoubtedly, the Mac maker will use machining to craft the tablet’s shell but it’s not likely this will make the top of the list in terms of specifications when it’s out.

On the other hand, a 7.1-inch Multi-touch display using “intelligent feedback, finger print resistant oleophobic coating” does sound like something Apple would equip its tablet with. Also plausible is the built-in iSight and the ports.

Although tablet users are likely to rely on cloud computing, another obviously fake listing is Mac OS X “Clouded Leopard” version 10.7. “[...] According to these docs,” phoneArena says, “Apple’s tablet will run on the new Mac OS X 10.7 Clouded Leopard platform that will allow for touchscreen functionality and will bring a new widget-based homescreen.” The OS allegedly includes iTunes, Time Machine, QuickLook, Spaces, Spotlight, Dashboard, Mail, iChat, Safari, Address Book, QuickTime, iCal, Photo Booth and Front Row. These apps are indeed candidates to form the base of the tablet’s OS, although the “clouded” thing doesn’t resonate so much with our thinking.

Why even bother to publish all this fluff if that's all it is? It's a waste of your, and reader's time to read, speculating on stuff that does not even exist. When it comes to fruition, it will be officially announced, (assuming some form of tablet is to even come to fruition). Until Dictator Apple decides to make an official announcement, all this over-hyped fluff is internet-based imaginations based on hearsay, here, there, everywhere.

I'll continue to work with my existing equipment (I know it exists) until something is officially announced.

That's an old copy. It's been renamed to "Sky Leopard", but that's not even the cool part of the OS, although it does make life easier.

The scans that are supposed to be proof that someone uncovered this information is actually all the proof that we need to know that it is fabricated.

There are all kinds of grammatical errors on the scans. If these were truly written and published by the geniuses at Apple, on the front page, "Widget based" would be hyphenated. "Upto" would be separated into two words. And really, the whole thing would be worded differently. The bullet-points all sound as though they were written by someone with a limited education.

The second page sets off the BS meter for other reasons. First, the hard drive doesn't make sense. It's slow, it's big, and it is a power hog. I think we can expect SSD with this thing. Second, the optional superdrive would not be USB-based. This is a completely mobile device. Why on earth wouldn't Apple use the same wireless drive that is used by the Macbook Air?
Finally, the OS doesn't make sense. A true cloud OS based on Mac OS X would not be a revision number upgrade from the current Mac OS. I mean, it would not be Mac OS X 10.7. I would think that it would be a near-complete rewrite of the core OS. It would be Mac OS XI or it would be called something completely different. I also don't think Apple would reuse the "leopard" name again. If this is to be the next big thing, you don't reuse a 2-year old name.

Although this is quite possibly a fake. To use the term Clouded Leopard for the OS is quite clever I think. Firstly, another name for the Snow Leopard or Ounce is The Clouded leopard. Secondly, we all know that alot of talk has been banded around of "cloud"word processing etc etc and programming so to use Clouded Leopard could imply that it is a cloud version of the snow leopard OS. Hard to think of a reason why they would put a SATA drive in other than cost. Surely a SSD is more appropriate. Would have thought that the new USB 3.0 ports more appropriate also especially seeing as they are backwards compatible with USB2 so wouldn't run into issues there. Simply use your USB 2 peripherals until USB 3 ones come along. maybe the new implied iSlate superdrive is USB 3. I like the idea of a built in projector too.

Clearly fake, look at the Clouded Leopard paper, you can see that the description text is crooked while the top text is not.

KrissyT, wow. You nailed it. You posted that over 3 weeks before the name was announced. Not that you'll probably ever look at this page again.

All you people (like me) who have been waiting years for a Mac OSX tablet can forget it and move on, it isn't going to happen, if it was, it would have by now, we are way past the technology. and here is why... They want control of ALL your stuff and if you own a laptop they you have control not them. Steve Jobs said something to the effect of "the post-PC era has arrived" because he wants you to use cloud computing so they control your data. Eventually you WILL give up your laptop and get an ereader (read 14th generation souped up ipad that does everything they want you to be able to do [for a recurring fee of course]) So they are going to ram cloud computing down our throats until we quit gagging and forget that we once in the past had control over our data. A true tablet would take us down the wrong road to that end and is therefore at odds with the concept of the cloud. However, you could rebel and buy something like a Modbook.
