Site leaks fake Apple tablet specifications

In what was a very predictable move someone finally “uncovered” the so-called development documentation of the Apple tablet, or iSlate, as some believe it will be called. While the iSlate dubbing sounds like it was picked out of a hat, rather than thought out by Steve Jobs & Co., these specifications purporting to be typical to an Apple tablet computer don’t rub us the right way either.

Rumor site phoneArena claims to have “received some images of what seem to be internal Apple documents, revealing the Apple iSlate specifications.” The site doesn’t go a long way to suggest they are not real, although it’s pretty obvious an Intel 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo processor and 2GB of RAM expandable to 8GB is a tad too much for tablet specs. Or so it would seem, if Apple isn’t targeting these babies at gene-splicing / hadron-colliding engineers.

Nevertheless, we cannot deny our readers the pleasure of going through the iSlate development document for themselves. Click on the two images in this article to see the alleged paper scans.

As this documentation would have us believe, Apple starts out by noting a “precision aluminum unibody,” a technology employed by all MacBook models today. Undoubtedly, the Mac maker will use machining to craft the tablet’s shell but it’s not likely this will make the top of the list in terms of specifications when it’s out.

On the other hand, a 7.1-inch Multi-touch display using “intelligent feedback, finger print resistant oleophobic coating” does sound like something Apple would equip its tablet with. Also plausible is the built-in iSight and the ports.

Although tablet users are likely to rely on cloud computing, another obviously fake listing is Mac OS X “Clouded Leopard” version 10.7. “[...] According to these docs,” phoneArena says, “Apple’s tablet will run on the new Mac OS X 10.7 Clouded Leopard platform that will allow for touchscreen functionality and will bring a new widget-based homescreen.” The OS allegedly includes iTunes, Time Machine, QuickLook, Spaces, Spotlight, Dashboard, Mail, iChat, Safari, Address Book, QuickTime, iCal, Photo Booth and Front Row. These apps are indeed candidates to form the base of the tablet’s OS, although the “clouded” thing doesn’t resonate so much with our thinking.
