An Apple Discussions thread that's sure to grow in the days to come is getting filled with complaints from various owners of second-generation Apple TV saying that Apple’s recent firmware update is inducing screen “flickering.”

A person identified as AppDad says “My ATV2 had been working great until I installed 4.3 today. Now every couple of second there is a very annoying flicker on the screen. I have a 1080i TV. Any suggestions? Any way to go back to 4.2?”

Unfortunately, Apple doesn’t support reverting to an older version of the iOS, neither on iPhones, nor on Apple TV units.

“I, too, am having this new screen flicker problem after installing the latest update,” writes a person identified as Jim2 on Apple’s forums.

“I tried rebooting the Apple TV, which entailed reentering all my passwords, etc., to no avail. Very annoying to say the least,” Jim2 adds.

“Same thing happened to me,” another forum user writes. “I have tried restoring settings and disconnecting the ATV2. What a major bummer! Shame on you Apple for not testing this update better!”

Wasting no time, an Apple representative identified on the forums as Roy B stepped in to ask everyone to provide information about the manufacturer and model number of their devices, in an effort to isolate the cause of the screen-flickering.

“Please post the manufacturer and model number of your TV that is experiencing this flicker issue with the 4.2 update,” he writes.

There has been some debate as to what the actual designation of Apple’s latest Apple TV firmware update is, and for good reason too, since the IPSW file reads 4.3, while the company advertises the update as being 4.2.

Either way, there’a bug to patch, and Apple’d better hurry up if it wants to keep its customers satisfied.
