Import tax to blame, but not necessarily applicable to iPads

Apple has launched its third-generation Apple TV in Brazil with a R$ 399,00 price tag, which translates into $211 US - more than twice the product’s original retail price in the United States.

The reason behind the inflated price is import taxes, Cultofmac reports. The new Apple TV boasts an A5 processor capable of outputting 1080p video, more memory, and relatively unchanged storage capacity. The product basically supersedes the previous-generation Apple TVs without any increase in price.

Brazil may not incur the same inflated fees for iPads, as the country houses the most recently-established Foxconn factory that assembles Apple tablets. Cultofmac notes that despite the heftier price tags, Brazil is sold on Apple devices and even on the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, whose name has been assigned to a street.
