With the entire jailbreak community already aware of the Dev Team’s latest feats, one question remained unanswered - what tools would jailbreak the Apple TV exactly? The answer: existing ones. PwnageTool will do fine. It just needs an update.

According to a report by Engadget, which looks at potential jailbreak benefits with Apple’s new set-top box, notes that iTunes recognizes the “media puck” as an iDevice, allowing the user to perform such tasks as “check for update” or “restore”, which paves the way for jailbreaking the device by feeding it a custom (jailbroken) IPSW file.

The ability to restore the Apple TV in iTunes by connecting its micro-USB port to a computer is regarded as a valuable asset for the likes of iPhone Dev Team.

Engadget explains that, thanks to the Apple TV’s ability to restore in iTunes via a micro-USB connection, existing PC- and Mac-based jailbreak tools can be updated leverage this method of connection.

A Mac-community-favorite, PwnageTool is likely to reemerge all updated and ready to hack the device, alongside other supported iDevices as well.

It adds that TinyUmbrella has already been updated to backup the Apple TV's SHSH blobs. As with the iPhone and iPod touch, this preserves a user’s ability to downgrade in the future.

Finally, the tech-site points out to the Apple TV’s on-board storage and memory, suggesting that 8GB of NAND flash and 256MB of RAM is just about enough to motivate the hacker community.

As reported earlier today, the iPhone Dev Team has already accomplished the task of gaining root access in Apple’s new hobby.

Softpedia doesn't encourage jailbreaking / unlocking the iPhone / iPod touch / iPad / Apple TV, or any other device.

This article has a purely informational purpose and doesn't, in any way, suggest that you should hack your Apple device.

Using hacks may render your device unusable, or may reduce the quality of your experience employing the respective device.

If you choose to download and install jailbreak tools, you will do so at your own risk. Unlocking / jailbreaking your iPhone / iPod touch / iPad / Apple TV may violate your warranty or the EULA with Apple and / or your cellular-service provider.
