But AT&T sells more based on sheer number of stores...

When it comes to going out and buying an iPhone, the customer has a choice of going to either an Apple Store or an AT&T one. Although those who are already Apple customers are much more likely to go to an Apple Store, these are few and far between, so for the majority of people, the AT&T store would be the better choice. Despite this, Apple's own stores manage to sell seven times more phones than the average AT&T store.

A team of analysts for investment research firm Piper Jaffray, have noticed that the average Apple Store will sell as many iPhones in a single day as most AT&T retail stores sell in an entire week. Gene Munster and fellow Wireless Analyst Mike Walkley spent a considerable amount of time counting the number of iPhones leaving Apple and AT&T retail stores across the country. It might sound quite dull, but the observations are worth noting. Each Apple Store will sell 21 iPhones in a day, on average, while AT&T's own stores usually sell 21 phones per week. That's a big difference, but not overly surprising considering the popularity of Apple's retail outlets. The numbers also suggest that Apple is very likely to hit its goal of 730,000 iPhones during the September quarter and may even sell as many as 804,000 units.

Despite Apple Store selling so many iPhones when compared to the AT&T stores, in the end, AT&T will invariably sell more units. If we take the numbers given in the report, with its 170 stores, Apple will sell around 24,990 units per week; meanwhile AT&T has 1800 stores, which will sell around 37,800 units per week. Despite Apple being so much better at selling their device, AT&T will end up selling more because of the sheer number of their small outlets all over the country.
