Pieces of the "Green Monster" covering the Boylston Street store are beginning to surface as "souvenirs"

This is so lame I've actually chosen to write a few words about it myself. What has the Boylston Street turned into, Area 52? Sure, Apple's stores are glamorous and the products the company sells should be cherished (plus you just gotta love them grand openings), but stuffing your pockets with debris left over from the construction of the store as a souvenir?

It's not exactly like you're tearing off one of Elvis' sideburns, really.

"The expensive, custom-made "Green Monster" covering over the Boylston Street (Boston) retail store glass fa?ade is long gone, but now souvenir pieces of the material are beginning to surface", say the folks handling news and information about Apple's retail stores. "One person has supplied a photo of an irregularly-shaped piece of the green stuff, about nine inches square. The material is described as being the thickness and strength of ordinary duct tape, and with a very strong, gray-colored adhesive backing. The green covering was removed from the glass two days before the store opened, and workers carefully carted it off in a large debris box. Souvenir hunters apparently took some of the material before it was taken away."

Those lucky sons of guns!

The Boylston Street Apple Retail Store Grand Opening took place Thursday, May 15. "When the Apple Store, Boylston Street opens this Thursday, May 15 at 6:00 p.m., it's sure to be a fan favorite", Apple said on its website. "To celebrate, we're giving away limited edition T-shirts and other surprises. There'll be plenty to do this weekend, including free workshops, special events, and live musical performances", Apple added.

Question(s): weren't the T-shirts enough? Did they really have to dig through garbage bins for stuff used to cover the store while it was being finished? Sure, if we go by the description of the findings, some may end up redecorating their homes using the "Green Monster" covering.

There's more. This actual piece of the "Green Monster" covering included a seam "where two pieces of the material overlapped when installed on the glass fa?ade". How cool is that?! An actual "seam" found on the elusive green material used to cover the Apple Retail Store!

OK, the truth is that, to a Boston Red Sox fan, a piece of the "Green Monster" (often known simply as The Monster) makes quite a souvenir. But these are not pieces of the actual 37-foot, two-inch (11.3 m) left field wall at Fenway Park and I would rather see an Apple fan collecting Macintosh 128K parts or Apple System Utility disks.

Plus, the same report reveals that the actual Fenway Park Green Monster wall is painted with a custom-mixed color that stadium workers specify as "fence green".

Bad luck guys, looks like it's not even the real thing.

UPDATE: tuaw.com reports that "a chunk of the Apple logo that stood front and center on the "Green Monster" facade is up on eBay. The proceeds are said to be going to boston2portland, a bike ride to raise money for the cure of Parkinson's disease. Since it's for a good cause, I guess it's not so bad after all. Plus, ifoAppleStore didn't say anything about pieces of the actual Apple logo.
