The online Apple store is experiencing one of its usual outages in anticipation of an update from Cupertino that’s more or less important. The Mac maker is now using an animated GIF banner to communicate the outage in several languages.

Apple has taken its online store down for maintenance, and while we’re not expecting much in terms of new products, the anticipation always gets the best of us.

It’s not often that Cupertino takes its store offline, and surprise product updates are an even rarer sight. There’s always the chance of this happening. Just don’t expect the iPhone 5 to pop out once the lights are on again. At most, Apple will update something.

The computer company may also be working on some backend stuff, meaning we might not even notice any changes when the store is back up. In the meantime, let speculation run loose in the comments.

Update #1: the Apple online store is back up with no visible changes at this point.

Updare #2: Apple has added the option to chat with a Genius online when buying an iDevice.
