Apple’s 10-year retail anniversary was celebrated this weekend via an initiative called Apple Store 2.0 which saw the introduction of interactive iPads that act like kiosks for the products on display. The devices can reportedly be used to get detailed info on the products, summon a specialist, or queue up to get service.

The first reports of these changes taking place came from Australia where Apple Store 2.0 launched first.

Before the launch, store managers had been briefed on the initiative, but it wasn’t until just before the opening that employees got the full scoop about what was going down.

As it turned out, Apple was eager to mark the passing of 10 years since its first retail store debuted with the introduction of a new way to let customers interact with the stores - via iPads.

Pictured above, the customized iPad 2 units now serve customers who wish to learn details about a certain product, compare features, see prices etc., as well as call on a store staffer for help (picture #2).

Sources say the iPads are running customized software (either a web app or a native iOS app), and that the home button is disabled. The tablets are not charged via their dock connector, but through a special cable that goes inside through a different area.

The iPads are also connected to a security cable, while the tablets themselves are fastened inside an acrylic glass stand.

At least for now, we’d say the initiative was pretty much about the introduction of this new way to interact with the stores.

However, we anticipate Apple is planning much bigger changes, and is now merely transitioning both staffers and customers.

It’s not the huge overhaul many were anticipating (such as actual store makeovers), though it is also being reported that some stores’ furniture has been rearranged, while some are seeing their local store’s accessories booth replaced with Personal Setup bars.

Have you visited any Apple stores recently? What’s changed in your area? Send us your pictures, or sound off in the comments.
