Apple today stopped the 50 billion downloads countdown saying that the milestone has been reached, and that it will soon announce the grand prize winner.

“50 billion app downloads. It couldn’t have happened without you,” says the Cupertino giant.

The App Store’s milestone was achieved after five years of existence. With such huge numbers recorded, anything past this landmark seems irrelevant to mention.

Apple will soon announce the winner of its $10,000 (€7,768) iTunes Gift Card, as well as the other 50 winners of the $500 (€388) Gift Cards.

The last downloaded app is yet to be announced as well. Which one do you think it was? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Contest entrants could also win without downloading apps, by simply completing a form. So far no iTunes Gift Cards have been won using this method.
