New iPhone 3GS units are jailbreak-proof, say hackers

A new BootROM called iBoot-359.3.2 has been spotted in new iPhone 3GS units, according to MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev Team. The BootROM is resistant to the 24kpwn exploit currently used to jailbreak the iPhone and iPod touch. Softpedia doesn’t condone jailbreaking.

Via an iClarified report, a tipster provides evidence of the new BootROM via a screenshot, with the site reporting that, “Apple is now shipping the iPhone 3GS with a new Bootrom that is not vulnerable to the 24kpwn exploit.” According to the piece, the iBoot-359.3.2 started shipping last week, while “MuscleNerd from the iPhone Dev-Team has confirmed that the loss of the 24kpwn exploit would mean a normal jailbreak would be impossible for the time being,” the report reveals on.

This comes as sad news for those who have recently acquired a brand-new iPhone 3GS (in territories where Apple doesn’t support the device) with the thought of unlocking it “out of the box,” going by the Dev Team’s promise that PwnageTool 3.1.4 would do the job. Needless to point out, these 3GS owners need to be extra careful with alleged unlocking-solution providers like iPhone Unlocking Ltd., which seemingly rip their customers off by selling the otherwise free jailbreak & unlock solutions developed by the iPhone Dev Team. Speaking of which, the ball is in its court again. This time, however, a jailbreak / unlock solution may take a while to arrive.

Unlocking / jailbreaking your iPhone / iPod touch may violate your warranty or the EULA with Apple and / or your cellular-service provider.
