The latest iTunes store, opened 4 days ago, has already set a new record: 1 million downloaded songs in 4 days.
In this way, iTunes Japan has become the leader of the digital music download in this country; Apple has signed contracts with 15 of the most important producing companies.
The only company not present in Apple's offer is Sony, which has its
own music download service, Sony Mora. Apple has succeeded to give the Japanese company a decisive blow, this service selling only 450,000 songs per month.
The most important artists and the most popular bands from Japan have a contract with Sony, but this wasn't an obstacle for Apple's iTunes.
When Apple opened the iTunes in 2002, it sold its first million in a week.
The success of iTunes Japan is due to the lower prices per song employed by the American company. Apple's offer in this country differs from that of other countries, iTunes introducing two prices. Ninety percent of the songs cost 150 yens, while the rest of 10% cost 200 yens. However 150 yens mean $1.35, while in the majority of countries, Apple prices its songs at 99 cents.
This led to speculations on Apple's intentions to introduce different prices in other countries, but Apple officials have denied it.
