Apple has commenced internal testing of the next major release of the iTunes application for Mac and Windows iTunes 11. The software is centered around iCloud and iOS 6, according to sources.

People close to the project are telling 9to5mac that work on iTunes 11 began quite a while ago - before iTunes 10.6 was even released to the public. Development is currently focused on “under-the-hood changes,” not aesthetic ones, as well as on compatibility with the upcoming iOS 6. “iTunes 11 includes an increased presence of iCloud integration,” the sources reportedly added.

Despite being built as an iOS 6 compatible-release, iTunes 11 may not necessarily launch alongside the new iOS, the sources cautioned, adding that it’s more likely Apple will deliver it further down the road:

“…Apple could very well release another iTunes 10.x point update as a simple iOS-6-compatiblity release."
