Kevin Timmons, former general manager of Datacenter Services at Microsoft, has reportedly been hired at Apple to conduct operations pertaining to the new (rumored) cloud-based MobileMe locker.

Via two separate reports comes word that people in a position to know have been dishing out details about a potential hiring of Mr. Timmons at Apple, though no one is saying anything for sure.

The folks at greenm3.com commenting on the subject say not to expect any press releases, nether from Microsoft, nor from Apple.

The matter is hush hush particularly because of Apple, we believe.

The company is heavily rumored to be actively planning the deployment of a cloud-based locker, likely as part of a revamped MobileMe, which allegedly offers a simple way to store your entire digital life on the cloud.

Much like iDisk, a component of the current MobileMe service offered by Apple, the rumored locker would allow customers to store all their photos, music and videos, as well as other digital aspects of their life, in a single ‘box’ at Apple’s North Carolina data center.

This box would be accessible via the ever-universal Apple ID which people now use to download their iOS and Mac apps, music, videos and other things that go through Apple.

For such big plans, Cupertino needs a pertinent ‘General Manager of Datacenter Services,’ and those with ties to both Microsoft and Apple say it’s Kevin Timmons.

It is worth noting that Apple doesn’t do hiring based on recent activity, but rather on proven, long-term achievements.

Timmons fits the bill. He also worked for Yahoo!, where he led the company’s datacenter build-out, according to All Things D.

The blog’s author, John Paczkowski, says he’s been told that Timmons’ role within Apple may go well beyond his datacenter experience.
