A note on Apple’s web site reveals that a new version of QuickTime is now available for Windows PC users. The update fixes a security issue affecting Windows 7, Vista, and XP SP2 (or later).

Softpedia reported late last month that a highly critical remote code execution vulnerability had been discovered in the latest version of QuickTime for Windows.

At the time, Secunia reported that the flaw could be exploited by tricking users into viewing a maliciously crafted Web page.

Now, “QuickTime 7.6.7 improves security and is recommended for all QuickTime 7 users on Windows,” according to the company behind the Mac operating system,

It is worth noting that Apple has waited over two weeks to plug this hole for QuickTime users running Windows.

In usual manner, Apple directs visitors of its web site to a technote offering detailed information on the security content of the update.

“For information on the security content of this update, please visit this website: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222,” the note reads.

By taking the trip to that location, Windows users learn that QuickTime 7.6.7 is aimed at PCs running either Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP SP2 and newer.

“Impact: Viewing a maliciously crafted movie file may lead to un unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution,” the bug’s summary goes.

A detailed description then follows, with Apple noting that, “A stack buffer overflow exists in QuickTime's error logging. Viewing a maliciously crafted movie file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.”

To address the problem, Apple disabled debug logging, the company says. It outlines that Mac OS X systems are unaffected by this issue.

QuickTime version 7.6.7 was posted on August 12, 2010 labeled as DL837 (download ID). The package is 32.28 MB in size and requires one of the aforementioned versions of Windows.

Supported Languages include (but are not limited to) Deutsch, English, Français, Español, Italiano, Nederlands, Dansk, Norsk Bokmål, Polski, Português, Português Brasileiro, Pусский, Suomi, and Svensk.
