Apple Rolls Out New AirPort Updates for Mac OS X, Windows

A slew of software updates has been posted to the Support / Downloads section of Apple.com, some of which Softpedia is yet to report on. In addition to the already-covered updates for for MobileMe, Aperture 3 and iPhoto ‘11 Users, Cupertino also spit out AirPort Utility 5.5.2 for Mac and Windows, as well as a firmware update to AirPort Base Stations and Time Capsules.

Both the Mac and Windows updates to AirPort Utility do pretty much the same thing. According to Apple, version 5.5.2 “contains bug fixes and improvements, including the following:

- Resolves an issue that caused the DHCP settings tab to display incorrectly
- Resolves an issue that caused the application to quit unexpectedly when automatically launched
- Resolves an issue that prevented the network password from being stored in the Keychain when the network on the 5GHz band was named differently”

AirPort Utility 5.5.2 for Mac requires Mac OS X 10.5.7 (Leopard). On the Windows side, the update can be installed on Windows XP SP3 or later, Windows Vista SP1 or later, or Windows 7.

For its part, AirPort Base Station and Time Capsule Firmware Update 7.5.2 brings a similar bag of fixes, some of which include the following noteworthy ones:

- General fixes to Wi-Fi base station stability
- Fixes some issues with AirPlay streaming
- General fixes with USB interoperability including connection to external storage devices
- Fixes some issues with NAT port mapping settings
- Disables TKIP security with 802.11n rates per the Wi-Fi Alliance specifications

About AirPort Base Station and Time Capsule Firmware Update 7.5.2 is to be applied on systems running Mac OS X 10.5.7 or later, Windows XP SP3 or later, Windows Vista SP1 or later, or Windows 7, Apple said.

The Mac maker adds an important note, advising customers to install AirPort Utility 5.5.2 or later before updating to Firmware version 7.5.2.

Finally, Apple also reveals that Time Capsule and AirPort Base Station (802.11n) Firmware 7.5.2 also packs some security fixes (detailed here).
