Apple’s Software Update mechanism is serving up a new SMC firmware update targeting three different MacBook models, which addresses a rare issue where the battery may act up after 1000 charge cycles.

MacBook Pro customers get SMC Firmware Update 1.6, MacBook (White) owners get SMC Firmware Update 1.5, and MacBook Air users are being offered SMC Firmware Update version 1.8.

Apple notes on its Support site, “This update addresses a rare issue on some Apple notebooks where a battery that has accumulated more than 1000 charge cycles may unexpectedly shut down or stop functioning.”

The patch applies to systems running OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), OS X 10.7 (Lion), and OS X 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion), according to the technical notes accompanying the release.
