OS X Lion, the successor of Mac OS X version 10.6 dubbed Snow Leopard, might be released as soon as next week, and Apple is already readying its retail locations for the landing, recent reports suggest. The company is having its retail stores ready for the release of the new OS version, which was confirmed last month to be arriving in July, without a specific availability date made official until now.

A series of recent reports suggests that Apple has scheduled overnights for retail stores, which point at the near availability of OS X Lion.

One report claims that Wednesday, July 13th, is the date when Apple changes store layouts and promotional materials, and when employees are briefed on the new products.

Another story claims that, in addition to scheduling overnights for the next week, Apple also required for display Mac machines in its stores to be packed with upgraded RAM before this week is over.

When put together, these events clearly point towards the near launch of what Apple claims to be the most advanced operating system it released.

Apple is reportedly set to offer some of its customers the possibility to download the new platform at their local retail store next week, so that they would receive assistance for learning what was changed in the OS.

Along with the new OS X Lion, the Cupertino-based company might also bring to shelves new, revamped MacBook Airs as soon as next week.

Other Mac refreshes are also expected to be announced next week, including the Mac mini, MacBook and Mac Pro.

Chances are that stocks of MacBook Pro and iMac would be low for a while, as Apple revamped them recently, and it is moving to systems that come with OS X Lion preinstalled.

Some of the latest rumors on the availability of the new platform proved wrong, and we'll take the info on OS X Lion's landing on July 14th or soon after with a grain of salt for the time being.
