Cupertino-based company Apple announced on Tuesday the financial results for the third quarter of the fiscal year 2009 (ended June 27, 2009), and posted a revenue of $8.34 billion with a quarterly net profit of $1.23 billion, or $1.35 per diluted share. At the same time, the company also announced a gross margin of 36.3 percent, and that the international sales rose up to 44 percent of the quarter’s revenue. For comparison, for the same quarter a year ago, Apple posted $7.46 billion in revenue and a net quarterly profit of $1.07 billion, or $1.19 per diluted share, while the gross margin was of 34.8 percent.

During the three months ended June 27, Apple managed to ship 2.6 million Macintosh computers, which accounts for a four-percent unit growth on a yearly basis. The number of iPods sold in the quarter was of 10.2 million, marking a seven-percent decline compared with the same time frame a year ago, while the number of iPhones sold went up to 5.2 million, a 626-percent unit growth year on year.

“We’re extremely pleased to report record non-holiday quarter revenue and earnings and quarterly cash flow from operations of $2.3 billion,” Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO, said. “Looking ahead to the fourth fiscal quarter of 2009, we expect revenue in the range of about $8.7 billion to $8.9 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share in the range of about $1.18 to $1.23.”

According to the company, it “recognizes revenue and cost of goods sold for iPhone and Apple TV over their estimated economic lives,” so as to be in accordance with the subscription accounting treatment required by GAAP. Thus, it announced non-GAAP “Adjusted Sales” of $9.74 billion, as well as an “Adjusted Net Income” of $1.94 billion.

“We’re making our most innovative products ever and our customers are responding,” Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, added. “We’re thrilled to have sold over 5.2 million iPhones during the quarter and users have downloaded more than 1.5 billion applications from our App Store in its first year.” As reported before, the company offers a live webcast of the conference call available for replay for almost two weeks, starting July 21, at www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/ (QuickTime required).
