Apple is reportedly considering a bid to obtain rights for putting the UK’s Premier League on the Apple TV and iPad.

Reports in Britain say that the Cupertino, California-based computer giant sees the Premier League as the type of premium content that will increase the Apple TV’s market share in the UK.

With talks of a full-fledged television offering on the way from Apple, the billion-pound bid certainly makes sense.

According to The Telegraph, the last round of UK TV rights (for 2010 to 2013) sold for £1.7 billion, while Apple has almost $10 billion in cash (roughly £6.4 billion) and some $70 billion (£45 billion) in cash alternatives and marketable securities.

Google is said to rival Apple’s bid in an effort to obtain the next set of live Premier League TV rights.
