Apple has released a new update for iPhoto users, addressing several minor issues and improving the stability of the software. The update is free to download and install on any machine running Mac OS X 10.5.6, the latest version of Leopard available.

Talking about the iPhoto 8.0.1 Update on the Support segment of its web site, Apple reveals that the new release should improve overall stability, while addressing minor issues in a number of areas, “including internet connectivity, keyword import, and slideshow export,” reads the documentation.

Weighing in at close to 12 megabytes, the update requires Mac OS X 10.5.6 and supports a number of languages, including Deutsch, English, Français, Español, Italiano, Nederlands, Dansk, Norsk Bokmål, Polski, Português, Pусский, Suomi, Svensk, Chinese, Simplified Chinese and more.

iPhoto has been developed by Apple itself exclusively for Mac OS X. The program is part of the iLife suite of applications and comes bundled with every new Mac. iPhoto can import, organize, edit, print and share digital photos. The software is comparable with Google's Picasa, Adobe's Photoshop Album, or Microsoft's Expression Media and Windows Photo Gallery.

This year, Apple released iLife '09, which also includes an updated version of iPhoto. Macworld editors were so impressed with iPhoto '09 that they gave it the “Best of Show” award. “iPhoto '09 looks like reason enough to upgrade to the latest version of iLife,” said the editors who distinguished iPhoto '09 as a “Best of Show” award winner at Macworld Expo 2009.

Evidently, highlighted features include Faces, a new function that introduces “face-detection and facial-recognition technology,” and Places, which lets photographers organize photos by location. Other cool additions to iPhoto's repertoire are integration with popular social networking web sites such as Facebook and Flickr, and the inclusion of new slideshow themes. iPhoto also boasts the ability to export slideshows as videos for iTunes, iPods, or iPhones.

By now (2012) we are out of Snow Leopard and on to Lion. The new version of iPhoto on my Mac Air 13" sucks. It has moved things around onscreen to no purpose. It wastes screen real estate with less compact drop down boxes. It does not maximize the images automatically, and hides the slideshow access someplace I only found once. Besides this there are a lot of greyed out (crippled) features they probably want to sell you afterwards. This is starting to look like Microsoft work.
