Apple has rolled out a new version of its iPhone Configuration Utility, the tool that allows administrators to create, maintain, encrypt, and install configuration profiles, track and install provisioning profiles and authorized applications, and capture device information including console logs.

iPhone Configuration Utility (IPCU) is recommended for those managing devices running iOS 4.0 or later, Apple said.

“Configuration profiles are XML files that contain device security policies, VPN configuration information, Wi-Fi settings, APN settings, Exchange account settings, mail settings, and certificates that permit iPhone and iPod touch to work with your enterprise systems,” the company explains on the Downloads area of its web site.

Version 3.1 brings the usual bag of enhancements.

“iPCU version 3.1 adds support for new Mobile Device Management (MDM) features introduced in iOS 4 and enables wireless delivery of configuration profiles,” Apple reveals.

The company adds: “It also includes support for Cisco AnyConnect and Juniper Networks SSL VPN clients, CardDAV, multiple Exchange accounts and SAN support using Simple Certificate Enrollment Protocol (SCEP).”

iPhone Configuration Utility 3.1 for Mac OS X, Windows was posted September 08, 2010. It is a 9.94 MB download for Mac OS X, and a 31.76 MB download for Windows users.

System Requirements include Mac OS X 10.6, Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, Windows 7, and .NET 3.5 SP1.

Supported Languages include Deutsch, English, Français, Español, Italiano, and Nederlands.

After introducing iOS 4, Apple touted the software as enterprise-ready thanks to the addition of several new features and enhanced security.

“iOS 4 works with Microsoft Exchange and standards-based servers to deliver over-the-air push email, calendar, and contacts,” Apple said.

“iOS 4 protects your data by encrypting information in three separate areas: in transmission, at rest on the device, and when backed up to iTunes.

“You can securely access private corporate networks through industry-standard VPN protocols. And companies can easily deploy iPhone across an enterprise using configuration profiles,” the company added.
