A new firmware update is available from Apple with the purpose of addressing a graphics issue that caused some users’ iMacs to hang under certain conditions when running OS X Lion.

According to the Cupertino, California based technology giant, iMac Graphic FW Update 3.0 “fixes a graphics issue that may cause an iMac to hang under certain conditions.”

“Do not shut off the power on your iMac during this update. Loss of power could result in your iMac failing to start up,” Apple warns.

Weighing in at just 482 KB, iMac Graphic FW Update 3.0 calls for OS X Lion (OS X 10.7 or later), therefore it is not to be applied on systems running Snow Leopard, or Leopard.

Supported Languages listed by Apple include Deutsch, English, Français, Español, Italiano, Nederlands, Dansk, Norsk Bokmål, Polski, Português, Português Brasileiro, Pусский, Suomi, Svensk, Albanian, Arabic, British English, Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Estonian, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Icelandic, Indonesian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonia, Malay Malaysia, Montenegro, Romanian, Slovak, Slovenian, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

The last Graphic FW update issued by Apple was this June when the company was faced with having to address issues with certain iMacs becoming unresponsive on startup, with a white or gray background, or vertical lines showing up on the display.

Specifically, iMac Graphic FW Update 2.0 fixed an issue that caused an iMac to hang during startup or waking from sleep, but only in some rare cases.

As a resolution, Apple simply advised customers to “Install the iMac Graphics Firmware Update 2.0 if your computer exhibits these issues. To install the update, choose Software Update from the Apple () menu and follow the onscreen instructions.”

Those who haven’t yet applied this update can do so by downloading the installer package here.
