iBook sellers using Apple’s dedicated creation tools to create engaging books with galleries, video, interactive diagrams, 3D objects, and mathematical expressions have a new and improved tool at their disposal starting today.

iBooks Author is available as a free download from the Mac App Store. Apple calls it “an amazing app that allows anyone to create beautiful iBooks textbooks — and just about any other kind of book — for iPad and Mac.”

“No need to let the blank page scare you. Just start with a beautiful Apple-designed template. Choose from a variety of styles, like classic textbook, cookbook, or photo book, in both landscape and portrait orientations. And you can choose from a variety of page layouts in each template, or create one of your own,” the Mac maker explains.

But it’s not always working properly. Some users have been unsatisfied with the app’s performance, so Apple took steps to remedy the situation and delivered iBooks Author 2.1.2 today, featuring “stability improvements and bug fixes.”

The requirements remain in place for this new version: OS X 10.7.4 Lion or later, 2 gigs of RAM, 1.2 GB of free disk space, iWork apps for various tasks (such as importing documents and presentations), iBooks for Mac (to preview the book being assembled), and iTunes Producer for publishing. iBooks Author supports dozens of different languages.
