Developers creating media-rich applications using Apple’s iAd Producer have a new update to install which enhances the overall performance of the application, while adding Retina display support.

iAd Producer is a tool created by Apple Inc. for developers to design and assemble rich interactive iAd content. Despite being primarily targeted at the code savvy population, the tool does not require any programming skills.

“iAd Producer makes it easy for you to design and assemble high-impact, interactive content for iAd,” Apple explains, adding that the software “automatically manages the HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript behind your iAd to make creating beautiful, motion-rich iAd content as easy as point and click.”

“For advanced developers, iAd Producer offers sophisticated JavaScript editing and debugging, along with a powerful extension mechanism that enables them to create and re-use their own page templates and components,” the company adds.

iAd Producer 2.1 is now available as a free download from the Mac maker’s Dev Center. “This update contains various improvements and fixes,” says Apple, following with a lengthy change log.

The release notes reveal that iAd Producer 2.1 improves load and save performance for iAd projects, and enhances the performance of exported ad units. The updated app facilitates better pre-load behavior for assets in exported ad units, and allows ad upload and testing with iOS devices connected via USB.

Furthermore, iAd Producer 2.1 reduces device memory usage for image views, enables use of image sprites, provides support for on-device debugging, enables Twitter integration in iAd content, and (by providing an onion-skinning view) simplifies visualization of animations. Other new features and enhancements include (from the change log):

- Expands the types of assets that can be imported and managed in the asset library to include common document types. - Supports the new media object in iAd JS. - Provides support for integration of WebGL assets in iAd content. - Extends device support to include iPad (3rd generation).
