A new version of the X11 window system is available to download for OS X 10.7.5 “Lion” installations. Customers experiencing errors with their X11-powered apps are encouraged to perform the update.

A computer software system and network protocol that provides a basis for graphical user interfaces (GUIs), X11 enables applications like the GIMP open-source image editor to display its interface on the Mac.

Newer versions of GIMP now run natively on OS X, which means X11 is no longer required. However, other programs still depend on the add-on, and for some users who are too accustomed to older versions of their applications, this patch is godsent.

According to Apple, “this update is recommended for all X11 users and resolves an issue that may cause X11 applications to unexpectedly quit.”
