Apple has released new Java updates for users of its Mac operating system bringing the web platform to version 1.6.0_45. The updates deliver improved security, reliability, and compatibility.

In order to patch no less than two dozen vulnerabilities in Java, Apple this week rolled out two separate updates: Java for OS X 2013-003 and Java for Mac OS X v10.6 Update 15.

The first update is targeted at OS X Lion and OS X Mountain Lion operating systems. The latter is for Snow Leopard customers. Both updates address the same flaws in Oracle’s Java platforms.

According to a security advisory published by Apple on its Support site, “Multiple vulnerabilities existed in Java 1.6.0_43, the most serious of which may allow an untrusted Java applet to execute arbitrary code outside the Java sandbox.”

“Visiting a web page containing a maliciously crafted untrusted Java applet may lead to arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the current user,” the advisory reads.

Apple addressed said issues by updating Java to version 1.6.0_45. Customers who wish to learn more about the update are directed to Oracle’s official Java release notes at this address.

Java for Mac OS X v10.6 Update 15 not only delivers improved security, reliability, and compatibility for Java SE 6, but also enables website-by-website control of the Java plug-in, but only in the latest versions of Safari from Apple.

Safari 5.1.9 and Safari 6.0.4 are now available for download onto Snow Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion operating systems.

Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 15 weighs in at 69.39 MB. Java for OS X 2013-003 is a bit smaller, coming in at 67 MB.
