Half a dozen new camera models have been added to Aperture 3 and iPhoto 11 through Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3, now available for download from Apple.

Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.13 is a must-have for photography aficionados, as it brings new RAW image compatibility for cameras that had been previously unsupported in Aperture 3 and iPhoto 11.

New additions in this week’s release include Canon EOS-1D X, Nikon D800E, Nikon D3200, Olympus OM-D E-M5, Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GF5, and Sony Alpha SLT-A57.

Retaining more image information than traditional JPEGs, digital camera RAW formats can produce better results when used with imaging applications, such as Apple’s Aperture and iPhoto, as well as other professional imaging tools, like Adobe’s powerful Photoshop.

OS X 10.7 Lion currently provides system-level support for hundreds of digital camera RAW formats from all high-end cameras released by the likes of Canon, Epson, Fujifilm, Hasselblad, Konica, Leaf, Leica, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax, Samsung, and Sony.

“Aperture 3 supports the RAW formats from more than 150 digital cameras and camera backs,” the Mac makers state on the marketing pages of Aperture on Apple.com.

Models marked with an asterisk require Aperture 2 or later with Mac OS X v10.4.11 Tiger or Mac OS X v10.5.2 Leopard. Models marked with two asterisks require Aperture 3 or later on newer versions of the Mac operating system.

Aperture also lets users work with most DNG files and, for JPEG fans, images can be imported from all digital cameras out there.

“When it comes to working with your photos, the built-in tools you find in Aperture are just the beginning,” Apple continues. “With dozens of image editing and export plug-ins, automations and scripts, and third-party book and web themes available, you can easily extend the capabilities of Aperture by accessing an entire industry’s worth of imaging expertise — without ever leaving Aperture,” says the Cupertino tech giant.

Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3 applies to systems running Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard and OS X 10.7 Lion (all versions).
