Second- and third-generation set-top boxes targeted with iTunes Store fixes in Australia

A surprise software update is available from Cupertino, California targeting owners of a second- or third-generation Apple TV set-top box.

iOS 5.0.2 (9B830) for AppleTV2,1 and AppleTV3,1 was released yesterday, June 5th, at 4:00 PM with the sole purpose of addressing an issue which caused content restrictions to be incorrectly applied for the iTunes Store in Australia, according to people who own the hardware.

The documentation isn’t out yet on the official Apple Support site, and there don’t seem to be any extra changes included in this build.

However, it wouldn’t be unheard of for the Mac makers to make a tweak here and there without bothering to make a note in the changelog.

The release supersedes the previous iOS 5.0.1 software update, which adds the ability to watch previews for movies and TV shows from the iTunes Store in HD, improves the reliability of Home Sharing connections, addresses an issue affecting Netflix login and navigation, fixes an issue that caused some iOS apps to have trouble connecting via AirPlay, and includes fixes for issues affecting stability and performance.

To update your Apple TV to the current software version, follow the instructions below (courtesy of Apple):

1. Select Settings > General > Update Software. Apple TV checks to see if an update is available and a download message should appear if an update is available. 2. Click Download and Install to start the download process (or Download Now on an Apple TV 1st generation with Apple TV software 1.x).

Important: Do not disconnect your Apple TV during the update process. The Apple TV status light may flash slowly during the update and restart process; this is expected behavior.

Your Apple TV may restart during the update process, at which point it will display one or two Apple logos and status bars. This depends on which Apple TV you have, and it is normal behavior, according to Apple.
