Apple has released an update to its Remote Desktop Admin utility, recommending the new version to all Apple Remote Desktop users, as it addresses several issues related to the overall reliability. The release also incorporates a fix in the report-results window not being displayed for German, according to the Cupertino-based Mac maker.

Posted September 16, 2009, the 51MB file updates the Remote Desktop application used to remotely administer Apple Remote Desktop clients. The package can be downloaded for free as an automatic Software Update, or as a manual download from Apple Support Downloads, or Softpedia.

The Apple Remote Desktop 3.3 Admin package is contained in Apple Remote Desktop 3.3, which also includes Apple Remote Desktop Client 3.3.1. Apple Remote Desktop version 3.3 requires one of the following system software versions, according to Apple:

- Mac OS X v10.4.11;
- Mac OS X Server v10.4.11;
- Mac OS X v10.5.7 or later;
- Mac OS X Server v10.5.7 or later;
- Mac OS X v10.6 or later;
- Mac OS X Server v10.6 or later.

In addition, the update requires Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) version 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, 3.2.1, 3.2.2, or 3.3 (client) and an Ethernet (recommended), AirPort, or IP over FireWire network connection.

Allowing users to add Apple Remote Desktop version 2.x and 3.x clients to their computer lists, Apple Remote Desktop 3.3 will automatically assist them in upgrading to the current version of the client software. If users choose not to upgrade their computers running version 2.x of the client software, they will only be able to control/observe them.

Some improvements include: enhanced support for accessing client computers and task servers behind NAT (Network Address Translation) routers; a new "Reporting" tab in the client computer Info window, to set a single reporting policy for the client computer, shared by all Remote Desktop administrator computers; support for finding and adding client computers via wide-area Bonjour; an improved screen-sharing performance with RealVNC; support for using Services to perform automated Remote Desktop tasks in Mac OS X v10.6.
