Apple has released QuickTime Player 7.6.6, a new version of its old media player originally debuted in Mac OS Classix (System 7). Also available for Windows, QuickTime Player 7 supports older media formats such as QTVR, interactive QuickTime movies, and MIDI files. Those who upgraded to Snow Leopard can continue using the same license for QuickTime Pro, should they have one.

The Downloads area of Apple’s website explains what QuickTime Player 7 does. However, the “About QuickTime Player 7.6.6 for Mac OS X v10.6.3” lacks any indication as to what this version changes.

QuickTime Player 7 supports older media formats, such as QTVR, interactive QuickTime movies, and MIDI files on Snow Leopard. It also accepts QuickTime 7 Pro registration codes, which turn on QuickTime Pro functions.

QuickTime Player 7 will be installed in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder."

Apple then directs users to Support article HT3678, where it explains that Mac OS X v10.6 comes with QuickTime X installed. The player features a clean and uncluttered interface, easy media sharing, and flexible recording capabilities, Apple says. “A Mac OS X v10.6-compatible version of QuickTime Player 7 is also available,” Apple reveals. It’s right on the Snow Leopard restore / installation disc that shipped with your Mac, but you can also manually download the player using this link.
