An update to QuickTime 7 for Mac OS X 10.5 and Windows is now available from Cupertino, Softpedia is proud to inform. A release focused on patching several vulnerabilities found in the media player, version 7.6.9 is immediately available for download (for both Windows and Mac OS X) using the links below.

Talking about the new release, Apple states on the Support area of its web site that “QuickTime 7.6.9 improves security and is recommended for all QuickTime 7 users on Windows.”

Although Apple does not specify this directly, the update is also available for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard users.

It provides a link to Support document HT1222 which lists the bugs in question, as well as methods employed by Apple to address them.

“For information on the security content of this update, please visit this website: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222,” Apple’s note reads.

Apple also makes an important note for QuickTime 6 Pro users, informing them that “Installing QuickTime 7 or later will disable the QuickTime Pro functionality in prior versions of QuickTime, such as QuickTime 6.”

“If you are a QuickTime 6 Pro user and you proceed with this installation, you will need to purchase a QuickTime 7 Pro registration code in order to regain QuickTime Pro functionality,” Apple explains.

The Mac maker advises customers to visit the Apple Online Store to purchase a QuickTime 7 Pro registration code after installation.

Most of the holes patched in QuickTime 7.6.9 for Windows also affect the Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard) version of the software.

Most of the issues addressed in this release are considered critical, as they may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

Update: article modified to include references to Mac OS X 10.5. Leopard. Prevously, the report stated that QuickTime 7.6.9 was a Windows-only release.
