Available as a standalone program on the Mac App Store, OS X Server has been promoted to version 2.1.1 in order to add options for managing DHCP service from within the app, iOS 6 support, and more.

Server is now a single application that customers can simply download onto Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store and turn their Mac into a server.

“Anyone can quickly and easily turn a Mac running Mountain Lion into a server that’s perfect for home offices, businesses, schools and hobbyists alike,” says Apple.

The software comes with the usual server features, including File Sharing, Wiki Server, Profile Manager, Time Machine tools, Mail Services, Calendar Server, Messages Server, Virtual Private Network (VPN), Xsan, and more.

OS X Server version 2.1.1 lets you manage DHCP service from within the Server application, and offers support for iOS 6 device management in Profile Manager.

You can now use the Server application to create a large number of users or groups, and authenticate with Calendar Server when using an Active Directory account.

The update also makes it easy to renew certificates for use with the Apple Push Notification Service, configure DNS entries with second level domains and aliases, and retain network, DNS and PHP settings while installing or upgrading the OS X Server application.

Users migrating from Lion Server and Snow Leopard Server will also see some improvements, according to the release notes.

Apple says, “OS X Server is the next generation of Apple’s award-winning server software. Designed for OS X and iOS devices, OS X Server makes it easy to share files, schedule meetings, synchronise contacts, host your own website, publish wikis, configure Macs, iPhones and iPads, remotely access your network and more.”
