OS X Server may be on track for a major overhaul this fall, but that’s not stopping Apple from continuing to maintain the current version of the software with enhancements and bug fixes.

As OS X Mavericks Server is getting prepped for release, Apple continues to carry out maintenance on the current version of the software for Mountain Lion customers.

An update sporting version number 2.2.2 has been released in the Mac App Store for OS X Server v2.0, v2.1, v2.1.1, v2.2, or v2.2.1 with new tweaks and code corrections, including security fixes.

The update requires OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.5 and is recommended for all OS X Server users, Apple says.

In a Support document describing the OS X Server v2.2.2 update, the Mac maker indicates that the only major change in this new version is improved reliability of Profile Manager when adding applications to a Dock payload.

However, customers visiting the Mac App Store to get the full scoop on this update will soon learn that OS X Server 2.2.2 holds much more than meets the eye.

The new Server release speeds up the process of downloading software from the Mac App Store, includes Time Machine service monitoring of backed-up computers, Wiki Server support for MacBook Pro with Retina displays, and the ability to use Active Directory groups within Profile Manager.

Furthermore, users who update will get support for bonded or virtual network interfaces in Server, and a centralized certificate management interface.

Various fixes are included for several known issues, of which Apple mentions: deleting apps uploaded to Profile Manager; administering Profile Manager from iPad mini; setup failures due to an SSL error; and Lion Server upgrading errors.

Several security patches are also embedded in this update, all of them detailed in Apple’s security advisory for Server 2.2.2.
