Apple has rolled out version 9.1.2 of its MIDI sequencer and digital audio workstation software application for Mac OS X, making it available as a free download for all users of the lite (Express) and full (Pro) versions of the software.

According to a tech note posted by the Mac maker on the Support Downloads area of its web site, the 9.1.2 update for Logic users delivers improved general stability and compatibility, as well as fixes for a number of known issues.

The following bugs and remaining incompatibilities with the Logic suite are fixed:

- Improved compatibility with 6 and 12-core Mac Pro systems - Support for iOS control surface apps that utilize the OSC protocol - REX files now supported in 64-bit mode - Improved compatibility with select Audio Unit plug-ins

Apple recommends that all users of Logic Express 9 and Logic Pro 9 apply the update. For express users, the download is 139.67 MB in size and requires at least Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard.

Pro users have a DMG file 193.01 MB large to download and apply on their system running the same minimum version of Mac OS X.

Logic Express was announced on 15 January 2004 for release in March 2004. It is now at version 9, and continues to be one of the important software projects at Apple; alongside Final Cut, and iLife.

Logic Pro and Express have common functionality and a virtually identical interface.

While Logic Express is limited to two-channel stereo mixdown, the Pro version can handle multichannel surround sound.

Express also lacks support for TDM/DAE systems, high-end control surfaces and Distributed Audio Processing.

However, both suites can handle up to 255 audio tracks, but users will need to pack some serious specs to take advantage of these extremes.
