Not long after the first customers started receiving their new 27-inch Thunderbolt Displays, Apple began releasing a bunch of updates, as well as support documents outlining some particularities with the new hardware.

It seems that compatibility and stability has been quite an issue with the new displays, as Apple has released yet another pair of updates targeted at Thunderbolt-enabled systems that are to utilize the Display.

Thunderbolt Software Update (Snow Leopard), as its name implies, is targeted at Mac OS X 10.6.8 users.

According to the company headquartered at 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, California, “This update provides support for the Apple Thunderbolt Display and bug fixes for Thunderbolt device compatibility.”

Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update, the second package users must install to get up and running with the new hardware, “improves the stability of the Apple Thunderbolt Display,” Apple says.

The Mac maker informs that “The updater application will be installed in the Utilities folder inside the Application folder and will be launched automatically when you close this installer.”

Users are instructed to follow the steps in the updater app to complete the update process.

Whereas the first update was solely aimed at Snow Leopard users, this second update targets both Mac OS X 10.6.8 and OS X Lion 10.7.1 or later.

Supported languages include Deutsch, English, Français, Español, Italiano, Nederlands, Dansk, Norsk Bokmål, Polski, Português, Português Brasileiro, Pусский, Suomi, Svensk, Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

Also particularly interesting is that while Thunderbolt Software Update (Snow Leopard) weighs in at 65.48 MB, the Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update comes in at a meager 923 KB.

This may have to do with the fact that Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update merely acts as a driver for the display, whereas Thunderbolt Software Update for Snow Leopard likely does all the legwork.
