OS X Server 3.1 is now available for download on the Mac App Store featuring Profile Manager support for the Device Enrollment Program, management of Activation Lock on supervised iOS 7.1 devices, and a lot more. The update is free for existing users, while newcomers must fork out $19.99 / €17.99 for OS X Server.

Apple boasts that its OS X Server software “makes it easy to share files, schedule meetings, synchronize contacts, develop software, host your own website, publish wikis, configure Mac, iPhone and iPad devices, remotely access your network, and more.”

Available as a standalone app that simply goes on top of any Mavericks (10.9.2) installation, OS X Server allows anyone to “quickly and easily turn a Mac running Mavericks into a server that’s perfect for home offices, businesses, schools, developers, and hobbyists alike.”

Version 3.1 is now available with Profile Manager support for the Device Enrollment Program, new settings to manage Fonts, AirPrint, and Wi-Fi Hotspot 2.0, improved Profile Manager scalability when large directories are involved, Activation Lock management on supervised iOS 7.1 devices, and enhanced permissions for device enrollment and accessing the My Device portal.

“Powerful yet streamlined, OS X Server makes it easier than ever for the people in your organization to collaborate, communicate, and share information,” Apple adds on the marketing pages of OS X Server.

“And because it’s so simple to deploy and manage, OS X Server is perfect for overtaxed IT departments and people who never thought they could run a server.”

OS X Server has been designed in such a way that it can be leveraged to the max by big companies and small studios alike, as well as by retail stores, “even home-based businesses can [...] benefit,” says the Cupertino giant.

“With OS X Server, you can make it easier for your employees to collaborate on projects and share files. You can also automatically back up important data, host your own website and mail servers, and much more,” Apple adds.

The Mac maker believes OS X Server is a very cost-effective solution, being just a $19.99 / €17.99 add-on to OS X Mavericks. Considering that you can use one copy for an unlimited number of computers, the purchase price is a fraction of what other server operating systems cost.

Users can run the software on any Mac Pro, iMac, or Mac mini sold within the past five years. Download OS X Server 3.1 and give it a shot today.
