The company behind the Mac operating system has posted the first Mail Services Update for systems running Mac OS X 10.6.2 Server. Addressing issues affecting the overall mail service reliability and performance, the update is available for free download via Apple’s Downloads section, the Mac OS X built-in Software Update mechanism and, of course, Softpedia itself.

On the Download section of its website, Apple describes Mail Services Update 1.0 as follows.

About Mail Services Update 1.0 This update addresses issues affecting overall mail service reliability and performance. The update is recommended for all servers running Snow Leopard Server version 10.6.2.

Taking users to Support document HT3975, Apple explains that there are three ways to install the Mail Services Update 1.0. Either use Software Update, as mentioned above, install from a standalone installer (from Apple Downloads or using the link at the end of this article), or install via the softwareupdate command-line utility. There, Apple also reveals that the update allows the Mail service to recover from an interruption in Directory Services, and reduces Mail service memory usage. The Mac maker details each installation method as shown below.

Software Update installation

Software Update may have referred you to this article. Because some updates are prerequisites for others, you may need to use Software Update more than once to obtain all available updates.

Standalone installer

If you want to download and manually install the update, an installer is available from Apple Support Downloads. This a useful option if you need to update multiple computers but only want to download the update once.

Remote installation

If you need to install the update on a remote server, you can do so using the Server Admin application or the softwareupdate command-line tool.
