Apple on Tuesday released an updated version of Xcode in the Mac App Store that adds support for the company’s latest Mac OS version, Mountain Lion. Xcode 4.5 Developer Preview 4 was also seeded to developers this week.

Documenting no changes whatsoever except for the added compatibility with OS X 10.8, Apple offers Xcode 4.4.1 free of charge through the Mac App Store.

According to the release notes for this new version, “This update runs on both OS X Lion and OS X Mountain Lion.”

The changelog continues with a list of changes included in Xcode 4.4, such as enhancements for the MacBook Pro with Retina display, additional support for C++11 features in the Apple LLVM compiler, a fixed issue where code completion could fail (requiring the user to delete derived data), and others.

“Xcode provides everything developers need to create great applications for Mac, iPhone, and iPad,” Apple states.

“Xcode 4 has been streamlined to help you write better apps. It has unified user interface design, coding, testing, and debugging all within a single window.”

“The Xcode IDE analyzes the details of your project to identify mistakes in both syntax and logic, it can even help fix your code for you,” says the company headquartered at 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, California.

Developers looking to use the absolute latest build of Xcode can download version 4.5 Developer Preview 4 (DP4) from Apple’s Mac Dev Center.

It is currently unclear what’s new in any of these new Xcode builds, but it’s a recommended practice that developers download the most recent version to code Mac and iOS software using the newest OS X release.
