iMessage, Game Center, FaceTime touted in new TV spot

Cupertino has begun re-advertising its ‘funnest’ device with a brand new television commercial that touts the enhanced capabilities of the iPod touch player with iOS 5 and content from the App Store.

Apple’s new TV ad focuses on the fun you can have with an iPod touch, the company’s long-standing portable media player that also works as a game console, Internet device and, most recently, a platform for communicating with your friends and family.

In fact, the new communication ability is the first thing Apple touts for the iPod touch with iOS 5: “With iMessage, Game Center, FaceTime and more, you can share the fun on iPod Touch,” the tech company says.

iMessage is a new text-messaging service introduced by Apple in iOS 5 which enables all iDevice owners to text each other for free, over WiFi.

You can send a message from your iPhone free of charge to a friend who owns an iPad, and they can text you back. It works the same with the iPod touch.

Game Center is a place where video game enthusiasts can meet up and compete or play co-op in multiplayer games, post their progress, view stats, and more.

“Bring your friends along for the ride. Or match. Or mission. Once you’re signed in to the Game Center app, you can invite someone by sending a friend request using their nickname or email address,” Apple explains. “Your friends show up in a separate Friends list in Game Center. Tap on friends’ names, and you can see what games they’ve been playing. You can also check out pending friend requests.”

FaceTime should also be considered a new selling point for the iPod touch. New-generation devices (4G) are equipped with cameras, one on the front and one on the back, and these allow you to do video calls, not just shoot video and stills.

As Apple itself puts it, the rest of the fun is for the user to discover.
