Bono has announced that Apple is “the leading crew” contributing to the RED foundation, which fights AIDS in Africa, with over $65 million / €48 million worth of donations from red-painted iDevices.

U2’s lead singer said Apple was “certainly leading the crew” of companies pitching in for the RED fund fighting AIDS in Africa.

Apple contributes to the fund by selling (PRODUCT) RED iPods, iPads, and various accessories, like cases and bumpers.

“When you buy (PRODUCT) RED merchandise, Apple gives a portion of the purchase price to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa,” the company says on its (PRODUCT) RED page.

RED devices include iPod shuffle, iPod nano, iPod touch, iPad, and iPad mini. Smart Covers are also available in RED.

RED said on Twitter that the fund had raised over $215 million / €160 million, suggesting that Bono’s claims regarding Apple’s contribution are quite accurate.
