A new firmware update targeting iMac models released earlier this year is now available for download, according to the listings at Apple’s Support Downloads section.

iMac EFI Update 1.7 is said to enable Lion Recovery from an Internet connection, and also includes fixes that resolve issues with Apple Thunderbolt Display compatibility.

Thunderbolt Target Disk Mode performance is also improved on iMac (early 2011) models.

Customers are being told that the iMac EFI Update will update the EFI firmware on their iMac computer. “When your iMac restarts, a gray screen will appear with a status bar to indicate the progress of the update. It will take several minutes for the update to complete. Do not disturb or shut off the power on your iMac during this update,” the Mac maker states.

Interestingly, Apple posted a picture of a Mac from the ‘90s to accompany the description.
