Apple briefly pulled the Mac OS X 10.6.5 Server update yesterday to reportedly patch a memory aliasing issue in Dovecot's handling of user names. Other flaws have also been discovered, reports indicate, although it is unclear whether version 1.1 of the system update does anything to address these as well.

Apple notes on the Downloads section of its web site that “The 10.6.5 update is recommended for all servers currently running Snow Leopard Server. This update includes general operating system fixes, as well as specific fixes,” and proceeds to list the patches in question.

The screenshot above shows the new listing, as well as a mistake on Apple’s behalf regarding the post date. The Mac maker likely intended to list the November 15 post date, not January.

Mac OS X Server 10.6.5 v.1.1 is also available via the built-in Software Update mechanism found on every Mac.

According to a report by TUAW, the new Mac OS X Server release is not only marked v1.1, but also has an incremented build number.

The Apple-centric blog points out to the aforementioned memory-related issue as the main reason for Apple’s move.

However, the site adds, the pulling of OS X 10.6.5 Server yesterday coincided with the discovery of more than one issue.

These, according to the source, included problems with Whole Disk Encryption, DNS resolution issues, LDAP/Open Directory master hiccups and remote connection drops.

It remains to be seen whether Mac OS X 10.6.5 Server v.1.1 will do anything to alleviate these problems as well.

Mac OS X 10.6.5 is the fifth major update to Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Apple’s current desktop operating system.

The Mac maker is known to be already working on the next such system update (Mac OS X 10.6.6) in parallel with Mac OS X Lion, the next generation Mac OS.

To be noted that Mac OS X 10.6.5 Server v.1.1 is only available for the Server incarnation of Snow Leopard, not the Client version. It also ships as a combo update for those looking to update from an older version than OS X 10.6.4.
