Numerous “known” issues remain in this build, final release may be far off

Apple has seeded a Golden Master (GM) build of Xcode 5.0.2, an upcoming new version of the company’s digital toolset for application development targeting iOS and OS X.

Apple first notified developers by email yesterday, revealing that a new Xcode download was available (screenshot above).

“This is a pre-release version of the complete Xcode developer toolset for Mac, iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. It includes the iOS 7.0.3 SDK and OS X 10.9 SDK. Xcode 5 requires OS X 10.8.4 or later.”

By making the trip to Apple’s developer portal, users could learn (via the seed notes) that Xcode 5.0.2, although having reached GM status, was still chock-full of bugs and issues that needed to be resolved before it can move onto Final status.

However, it’s not all bad news. It may be a while before Xcode 5.0.2 makes it into the Mac App Store as a free download for everyone, but the GM currently in testing still squashes a fair dose of bugs itself.

For instance, some Simulator issues are resolved in Xcode 5.0.2 GM Seed.

“After installation of Xcode, the iOS 7.0.3 simulator hangs on first launch for a period of time (eventually launching). This issue has been resolved,” Apple says, according to a developer with access to the release notes. Numerous other bugs are addressed as well.

Xcode 5.0.2 GM requires OS X 10.8.4 (Mountain Lion) or later to be used. Earlier versions of OS X (such as Lion and Snow Leopard) won’t support it. This GM seed includes SDKs (software development kits) for iOS 7, OS X 10.9, and OS X 10.8.

If you have a developer membership with Apple you can visit the company’s Dev Center and download Xcode 5.0.2 GM Seed straight away.
